We segregated and subjected Black people to racial hierarchy. We tortured and terrorized black people for a century. "Yes, and that's the irony! This country enslaved Black people for two-and-a-half centuries. "It's easier for Americans to memorialize something that was done to us, than it is to memorialize something we did to others." We believe in memorialization in this country." I listened all day to the coverage, it was powerful. One room contains jars of soil, with a name, place and date. The museum also depicts what arose after slavery was outlawed in 1865: a culture of degradation and violence toward Black people.
